Alma Thomas–Style Plate Tectonics Art Project
Goal:
Create a bright, abstract mosaic painting representing tectonic plates in motion using bold, repeated brush strokes (just like Alma Thomas!)

Materials:
  • Acrylic paints or tempera in vibrant colors
  • Large paper or canvas
  • Paintbrushes or sponges for dots and dashes
  • Pencil (to sketch large shapes, optional)
Instructions:
  1. Introduce Alma Thomas: Show examples of her work and talk about how she uses repeated colorful shapes to create movement and rhythm.
  2. Sketch Tectonic Plates (Optional): Lightly draw large, irregular shapes to represent plates. 
  3. Fill Each Plate with Patterns:Using small repeated brush strokes, dots, or dashes, paint each “plate” with its own vibrant color pattern.Science Connection:
    1. Each color block represents a tectonic plate.
    2. Patterns and overlaps show how plates move and interact.
    3. It’s a celebration of Earth’s dynamic crust through vibrant abstract art.
