Exploring Life Through The Carnival of the Animals
Featured Music: The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns
A 14-movement musical suite where each section playfully represents an animal or animal group—using tempo, rhythm, and tone to reflect behavior and traits.
Activity: “Music Detectives – Is It Alive?”
Play 1 movement at a time and ask:
- What animal is this?
- What do you hear in the music? (fast/slow, loud/soft, bouncy/smooth)
- Which characteristic of life does this remind you of? Why?
- Younger learners can draw the animal and label a life trait.
- Older learners can write a short reflection or act out one trait through movement.
Listen to Aquarium and say, “The music is flowing and mysterious, just like fish moving through water. They respond to light and sound and use energy to swim. That’s how they meet some of the characteristics of life!”
Discussion Prompts
- How does music help us understand animals and living things?
- Did any animals in the music feel “not alive”? Why?
- If something moves but doesn’t grow or reproduce, is it alive?
