The Story of the Cambrian Explosion
The Story of the Cambrian Explosion
Long, long ago, multicellular life had been quietly exploring the oceans.

For hundreds of millions of years, life grew slowly, mostly soft and simple, hidden in the water.

Then… something extraordinary happened.

Around 540 million years ago, the oceans seemed to burst with life.

Creatures of all shapes and sizes appeared.
Some had shells.
Some had spines.
Some had eyes to see the world for the first time.
Some swam, some crawled, some floated.
This was the Cambrian Explosion.

For the first time, life showed complex body plans.
Skeletons and shells protected bodies.
Limbs and antennae helped creatures move and sense.
Eyes let them watch the world around them.

Oceans became crowded.
Predators chased prey.
Prey developed defenses.
Life was learning new ways to live.

The sea floor became a stage.
Every nook and cranny held something new.
Life experimented, changed, and multiplied.
This explosion of diversity set the stage for the oceans, the skies, and eventually the lands to be filled with amazing creatures.

From tiny cells to cooperating multicellular life, to the sudden rise of eyes, shells, and limbs—the Cambrian Explosion was Earth’s way of saying:

Life will never be the same again.
